The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has rejected the proposed 70-thousand-naira monthly transport allowance for federal workers, demanding an increase in the minimum monthly salary to 300-thousand naira.

The allowance was agreed upon following a meeting between the Federal Government and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC. In a statement jointly signed by its President-General, Festus Osifo, and Secretary, Nuhu Toro, the TUC said the proposed allowance was inadequate to address the economic hardship facing workers and the wider population.

The labour union argued that the Federal Government had the capacity to raise the salary of the lowest-paid worker from the current 70-thousand-naira minimum wage to 300-thousand naira without waiting for another minimum wage review.

The TUC also called for the implementation of the agreement with the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, insisting that workers deserved improved wages and better welfare. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, has condemned its exclusion from the proposed transport allowance.
