US Judge Orders White House to Restore CNN, MS NOW, Politico Access

A US federal judge has blocked the White House from excluding journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico, following President Donald Trump’s decision to bar the media organisations from the premises last month. District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled on Tuesday that the Trump administration must restore the journalists’ access to the White House while a lawsuit filed by the three outlets challenging the ban continues. Kelly said the media organisations were likely to succeed in their legal challenge, citing violations of due process and constitutional protections for the press. The First Amendment to the US Constitution protects freedom of the press and other fundamental rights. Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House on September 18, accusing the outlets of publishing what he described as fake news and fiction and lies. The three media organisations subsequently filed a joint lawsuit seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent the administration from enforcing the restriction. A previous court order temporarily restored the journalists’ White House credentials, but the protection was due to expire on Tuesday. In his ruling, Kelly said the court would extend the existing relief to maintain the situation until the case was resolved.
