The United States Army has scheduled the execution of former Army Major Nidal Hasan, who was convicted for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people and injured 32 others. According to an execution order signed by Acting Secretary of the Army Adam Telle on Tuesday, Hasan is to be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, on December 3, at 1 p.m. Central Standard Time. The order followed US President Donald Trump’s approval of Hasan’s death sentence on October 2. The memorandum states that the execution will be carried out in accordance with Army Regulation 190-55, with the Commandant of the United States Disciplinary Barracks designated as the execution officer. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell had earlier announced that Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended the execution and that President Trump approved the recommendation. Hasan was convicted by a military jury in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder over the November 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood. Hasan, who was serving as an Army psychiatrist at the time, opened fire at a medical facility where soldiers were undergoing processing for deployment. If carried out, the execution would make Hasan the first member of the US military to be executed since 1961.
