Egypt petitions FIFA over officiating in World Cup defeat to Argentina

The Egyptian Football Federation has lodged a complaint with FIFA, calling for an investigation into the officiating team that handled Egypt's 3-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup last-16 stage.
The federation also demanded that French referee François Letexier and his team be removed from the remainder of the tournament, alleging serious officiating errors and inconsistent decisions that contributed to Egypt's elimination. EFA President Hany Aburida said the federation had formally requested an investigation into the referee and the Video Assistant Referee officials over what it described as serious refereeing mistakes and double standards.
The controversy centred on several key decisions during the knockout match, particularly an overturned goal by Mostafa Ziko when Egypt were leading 1-0, ruled out after VAR review identified an earlier foul on Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez during the build-up. Egypt later extended their lead through Ziko, putting them in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history, before Argentina fought back through goals from Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi, with Enzo Fernandez scoring the decisive winner in added time.
The Egyptian federation argued that the winning goal should not have stood, claiming the Pharaohs should instead have been awarded a penalty for an alleged foul on Hamdy Fathy by Alexis Mac Allister in the build-up. FIFA is yet to issue an official response to the Egyptian federation's complaint.
