The Federal Government says it will engage state governors and emergency response agencies to finalise plans for the nationwide adoption of 112 as Nigeria's single emergency telephone number.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, stated that the decision followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa between the Chairman of the Governing Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Idris Olorunnimbe, and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The engagement came shortly after the National Economic Council approved the adoption of 112 as the national emergency number across all levels of government and relevant agencies to support a unified emergency response system.

Vice President Shettima directed the Nigerian Communications Commission to develop a roadmap for implementing the initiative in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency to strengthen emergency response coordination nationwide. Nkwocha said funding for the project would be mobilised through the National Economic Council and the private sector, while urging emergency response agencies to demonstrate strong commitment toward successful implementation.
