The Federal Government has urged African countries to strengthen collaboration in shaping global telecommunications policies, stressing that greater technical cooperation and unified positions are essential to increasing the continent's influence in international digital governance.

The call was made today by the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Aminu Maida, during the opening of the 7th Ordinary Session of the Conference Preparatory Committee of the African Telecommunications Union in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of the NCC, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and the Federal Government, Maida said Africa's impact on global telecommunications decisions would depend on the quality of its preparation, technical expertise, and coordinated engagement rather than the size of its delegations.

He noted that Nigeria was honoured to host the gathering, describing it as a reflection of Africa's commitment to working collectively on decisions that will shape the future of telecommunications and the digital economy.

According to Maida, African countries that begin consultations early, build consensus, and develop technically sound positions are better positioned to influence international policy decisions. He reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to supporting the African Telecommunications Union by sharing regulatory experience, providing technical expertise, and promoting peer learning among member states.
