The Federal Government has announced plans to commence the nationwide deployment of a 90,000-kilometre fibre optic cable network within the next few weeks as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's digital infrastructure and expand access to high-speed internet.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this after briefing President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on the progress of key digital economy projects being implemented by the ministry.

Tijani said all funding and contractual processes for the ambitious project have been completed, clearing the way for physical deployment across the country. According to him, the fibre optic network will span all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, reaching every geopolitical zone, local government area and ward to significantly improve broadband connectivity nationwide.

He explained that the initiative is expected to bridge the country's digital divide by providing faster, more reliable and affordable internet access, particularly in underserved and rural communities. The project is also expected to stimulate economic growth, support digital innovation, enhance public service delivery and create new opportunities for businesses, schools, healthcare providers and millions of Nigerians who rely on digital services. The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to building a robust digital economy.
