The Lagos State Government has advised residents to avoid contact with floodwaters as the rainy season continues to affect parts of the state.

Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, warned that floodwaters are often contaminated with sewage, chemicals and other pollutants, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, as well as skin infections, snakebites and electrocution from submerged electrical installations.

Residents were also urged to drink only safe or treated water, maintain proper hand hygiene and switch off electricity before entering flooded homes.

The state government said flooding disrupts access to healthcare, schools, workplaces and other essential services, while also leading to property damage, loss of income and displacement of families. It noted that vulnerable groups, including older persons, young children, pregnant women, nursing mothers and people living with disabilities, face greater risks during flood incidents.
