Senate rejects motion to probe Presidency–Adeyemi controversy

The Senate has rejected a motion seeking an independent legislative investigation into the controversy surrounding the Presidency and the Director-General of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council, Adeniyi Adeyemi.
The matter was brought before the upper chamber today by Senator Suleiman Kawu, who attempted to raise the issue under matters of urgent public importance. Kawu had made a similar request the previous week, but the Senate declined to consider it.
Ruling on the motion, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said it would be inappropriate for the Senate to launch a separate investigation because the matter was already before the court and the President had directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the allegations.
Akpabio said the issue had been overtaken by events, noting that further legislative action at this stage could amount to interference with an ongoing judicial process.
