The Senate has urged the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, to conduct a comprehensive audit of all licensed miners and their operational locations across the country to improve monitoring and regulation of mining activities.

The upper chamber also called for the establishment of a statutory mining workers' compensation scheme to be funded through mandatory contributions from licensed mining operators. The proposed scheme would provide compensation for occupational injuries, permanent disabilities, work-related diseases and deaths resulting from mining operations.

Leading the debate, Senator Isah Jibrin said victims of mining accidents, especially families of deceased miners and those who suffer permanent disabilities, are often left without social protection despite the economic value generated from Nigeria's mineral resources. The Senate expressed concern over continued mine collapses, unsafe mining practices and unstable geological conditions, particularly in the Ankpa Coal Block.

The Senate also called on the Federal Government to establish a mine rehabilitation and victims support fund to provide emergency medical care, rehabilitation services, compensation for injured miners, educational assistance for children of deceased workers and livelihood support for affected families.
