The Senate has cautioned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against making statements that could undermine efforts by the Federal Government and security agencies to combat terrorism and kidnapping, following his call for the United Nations to investigate the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

The warning formed part of resolutions adopted after lawmakers considered a motion sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele on the successful rescue of 39 pupils and seven teachers kidnapped on May 15, 2026.

The Senate commended President Bola Tinubu for directing the Armed Forces and other security institutions to deploy all necessary resources, leading to the victims' release on July 10 and the arrest of eight suspected terrorists.

The Senate praised the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies and other security institutions for the operation, which lawmakers said demonstrated improved professionalism and coordination.

Senators, however, mourned the deaths of Lieutenant F.A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion of the Nigerian Army and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force during the rescue mission, while also recognising the injury sustained by Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain.

The chamber also noted that one of the abducted teachers died in captivity and urged the Federal Government to promptly pay all benefits and entitlements due to the families of the fallen personnel, while strengthening the welfare, training, equipment and operational capacity of security agencies.

The caution to Governor Makinde was introduced by Senator Adams Oshiomhole and seconded by Senator Aniekan Bassey, who represents Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District.
