President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions as part of efforts to strengthen the country's security architecture and improve the military's operational effectiveness.

The Presidency said the approval also includes the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel, acquisition of critical military equipment, improved troop welfare and sustained support for operational readiness and force modernisation.

According to a statement by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the expansion underscores the administration's commitment to equipping the Armed Forces to effectively tackle Nigeria's evolving security challenges. Under the new structure, the Army will operate 12 divisions strategically located across the country, with new divisions to be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo and Benin City.
