Nigeria is among the countries affected by a new wave of United States tariffs targeting 60 trading partners, with the measures taking effect on Friday after replacing a temporary global duty introduced earlier this year by President Donald Trump.

The new tariffs range from 10 to 12.5 per cent and affect major economies including China, India and members of the European Union. The measures have prompted protests from Beijing and several other countries impacted by the latest trade action.

United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the new tariff regime reflects Washington's long-standing enforcement of its ban on imports linked to forced labour and encourages trading partners to adopt similar measures.
