The Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress have rejected former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's proposal to restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027.

The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, separately warned that reversing the subsidy removal could recreate the fiscal pressures and economic distortions that led to its abolition.

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, has argued that Nigerians have not benefited enough from the savings generated since the subsidy was removed in 2023. He has also demanded an account of the funds saved, saying they should have been invested in poverty reduction, education, security and opportunities for young Nigerians.
