The Federal Government has commenced nationwide consultations with state governments and other stakeholders to develop a National Water Compact aimed at tackling Nigeria's persistent water and sanitation challenges.

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja at a stakeholders' consultation workshop on the proposed compact.

Utsev said the initiative is necessary to address challenges in the water sector, including rapid population growth, urbanisation, climate change, environmental degradation, inadequate infrastructure, weak institutional coordination and funding constraints.

According to him, the National Water Compact is being developed in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu and is expected to provide a coordinated framework for transforming Nigeria's water sector.
