The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has directed vice-chancellors, rectors and provosts of tertiary institutions across Nigeria to dismiss any student found, after due investigation, to be involved in kidnapping or related criminal activities.

The minister's Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Ikharo Attah, said heads of tertiary institutions have also been instructed to improve internal intelligence systems and work more closely with the Department of State Services and other security agencies in their states.

Alausa issued the directive during a meeting with the governing council and management of the Federal University of Lafia in Nasarawa State. The minister noted that Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education remain largely secure but stressed the need for stronger surveillance following isolated incidents involving students outside campuses.

He also disclosed plans for a coordinated strategy with the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, to strengthen the Safe Schools Initiative and enhance protection for learners across the country.
