Kano Assembly Passes Bill to Strengthen Regulation of Private Schools, Fee Increases

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026, with measures aimed at strengthening the regulation and management of private and voluntary educational institutions across the state.
The bill was approved during plenary after lawmakers considered and adopted the report of the House Committee on Education, which held public hearings and consulted stakeholders before presenting its recommendations.
Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Ismail Falgore, described the amendment as a major step toward improving the administration of private and voluntary schools in the state. The legislation provides for the establishment of the office of Executive Secretary to enhance the effective management of the board and its operations.
The amended law also requires private and voluntary schools to obtain approval before increasing tuition or other fees.
