The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has directed the Police Service Commission, the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police to deploy legally qualified police officers to police divisions across the country to strengthen legal oversight and promote compliance with human rights standards.

The order was issued by the Abuja Judicial Division of the court in a judgment delivered on July 10, 2026, in a suit filed by the Nigerian Bar Association through its Section on Public Interest and Development Law. The case sought judicial interpretation and enforcement of relevant provisions of the Police Act, 2020, and the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners, 2023.

Announcing the judgment on Sunday, NBA President Afam Osigwe said the court upheld key aspects of the association's claims aimed at strengthening legal practice within the Nigeria Police Force.
