Enugu to establish special GBV courts, rehabilitation centre for minors

The Enugu State Government has concluded plans to establish special courts to handle Gender-Based Violence cases and a rehabilitation centre for minors, as part of efforts to strengthen implementation of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law.
The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Osinachi Nnajieze, said the state remains committed to the law, first signed in 2019, and that the new rehabilitation centre would help end the detention of minors in adult correctional facilities.
He disclosed that efforts are underway to restore the Borstal Training Centre in Ngwo, built in 1932 as a rehabilitation centre for rescued teenagers before it was abandoned after the civil war in 1970, adding that a state delegation has inspected the facility to assess its condition and recommend a redesign for present-day needs.
