A Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin has fixed July 22, 2026, for the arraignment of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over alleged criminal defamation of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The Kwara State Government instituted the suit, accusing Saraki of publishing and circulating statements on April 17, 2026, through social media and newspapers, alleging that the governor did not attain secondary school education. The government maintains that the statements were false, defamatory and capable of provoking a breach of public peace, contrary to the provisions of the Kwara State Penal Code.

Saraki's counsel, Jimoh Mumini, had challenged the suit, arguing that the High Court lacked jurisdiction and that the matter amounted to an abuse of court process, urging the court to dismiss the charge. However, the prosecution opposed the application, describing it as lacking merit and asking the court to allow the case to proceed.
